Common Types of Dry Eye Disease
Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye
Aqueous Deficient Dry Eye disease happens when the lacrimal gland fails to produce enough tears to coat the surface of the eye.
The tears produced by the lacrimal glands consist of proteins, electrolytes and vitamins that are critical to maintain the health of the eye surface and also to prevent infection.
In most cases, Aqueous Dry Eye happens due to blockages in the Meibomian Glands in the eyelids.
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is perhaps the most common cause of dry eye. It happens due to blocked Meibomian glands in the eyelids.
These glands are responsible for producing oil that helps protect the surface of the eye while slowing evaporation of the watery part of your eye, keeping your tears stable.
Our MGD treatment is designed to remove blockages in the meibomian glands and restore oil production.
Meibomian Glands Structure
At Dryeye Rescue, we use high definition imaging technology to see the current state of your glands.
There are about 40-50 meibomian glands on the upper eyelids and 20-25 glands on the lower eyelids. When healthy, these glands should produce oil every time we blink, keeping our eye lubricated.
