It’s just like an MRI for your eye
Similar to an MRI or a CT Scan, OCT provides detailed images of the retina that are not visible using standard examination techniques or other tests. This allows very early detection of sight threatening diseases.
SD-OCT has twice the resolution and is 65 times faster than previous OCT technology. This technological leap forward has been compared to the advantage that jet propulsion achieved over propeller-powered aviation.
SD-OCT (Spectral Domain-Optical Coherence Tomography) is considered one of the most important technological breakthroughs in eye care in the past decade. OCT provides detailed images of the anatomical features of the front and back of the eye, including the cornea, retina and optic disc. It also provides mapping and shows change over time to help detect disease.
These are a few of the eye diseases that the iWellness exam can help detect and how they can affect your vision:
This disease does damage to the blood vessels in the retina caused by complications of diabetes. A recent CDC study reported that Diabetic Retinopathy affects approximately 1/3 of the diabetic population. The eye disease, if not detected and treated, can severely affect vision.
Glaucoma is a disease in which the nerve fibers suffer damage, permanently impacting vision in the affected eye(s) and progressing to blindess if untreated. It usually develops without obvious symptoms and it called the “sneak thief of sight”. There are 2.29 million American adults with glaucoma, yet 2 million more are estimated to have the disease and not know it.
This is an eye disorder that damages the center of the retina (macula), making it difficult to see fine details. It is caused by damage to the area around blood vessels that supply the macula and is a leading cause of vision loss for Americans age 55 and older.
Did you know that most sight-threatening diseases often have no outward signs or symptoms in the early stages? That is why it is extremely important to detect them early as this dramatically reduces your risk of vision loss.
