Myopia Can Be Managed

Myopia management is about managing a vision condition that affects your ability to see objects clearly or distant images. According to the American Optometric Association, nearly 30 percent of the U.S. population suffer from myopia.

What is Myopia Management

Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, occurs when the eyeball grows too long or the cornea is highly curved. It is a common cause of correctable vision loss, with uncorrected myopia remaining the leading cause of distance vision impairment globally.
Individual Studies Show variations in the prevalence of myopia and high myopia across regions and ethnic groups.
A Recent Landmark Publication estimates that by 2050, half the world population will have myopia.
Myopia Increases Your Risk of sight threatening complications for example, glaucoma, cataract and retinal detachment.

Myopia Treatment Management

The prevalence of myopia has significantly increased globally and prevention strategies have been put into place to slow down its progression. Our doctors have been trained to diagnose and manage this condition.


A few of our recommendations and treatment options are:

Increased time outdoors is the safest strategy that has been observed from interventional studies to decrease the development of myopia in school children. Sunlight helps promote healthy eye growth and lowers the changes of consistent significant increases in your child’s prescription. Spending less time on screen. The International Myopia Institute recommends approximately two hours of outdoor activity time.

Pharmacological strategies such as atropine 0.05% eye drop as directed resulted in less eyeball axial length compared to other dosages of this prescription medication. These patients are closely monitored for potential side effects.

Multifocal glasses and soft special contact lenses worn for a period of about two to three years in children between 8-13 years of age have shown to slow down myopic refractive error. But, vision may be blurry throughout the day.

Orthokeratology (Ortho K) are overnight lenses used to flatten the central cornea while you sleep and provide clearer vision after removal throughout the day. Orhtokeratology has been studied for many years and is more effective in slowing myopia in young children.

Chris Childress is the manager of Seaview Optical, a locally-owned company that has been providing quality eye care for over 30 years. Chris was born and raised in South Florida. He studied Political Science and International Relations at the University of Florida. Chris has been a part of the Seaview Optical family for over 20 years, as his sister was the store manager for 17 years before he took over as manager 8 years ago.
