What Causes Dry Eye Syndrome in Patients?

Dry eye syndrome develops when your eyes do not maintain or produce enough tears to keep the eye’s surface lubricated. Which can be a result of increased tear evaporation or reduction in tear production. The effects of dry eye syndrome can range from minor to severe from patient to patient.

Meibomian Gland Structure

There are about 40-50 meibomian glands on the upper eyelids and 20-25 glands on the lower eyelids. When healthy, these glands should produce oil every time we blink, keeping our eye lubricated.

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)

Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) is perhaps the most common cause of dry eye. It happens due to blocked Meibomian glands in the eyelids.

These glands are responsible for producing oil that helps protect the surface of the eye while slowing evaporation of the watery part of your eye, keeping your tears stable.

Our MGD treatment is designed to remove blockages in the meibomian glands and restore oil production.
